Fairmount Home has nursing services that meet our residents’ needs and are consistent with the Long Term Care Homes Act and the Professional Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario. We have Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers who provide services twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We also have a Medical Director and Nurse Practitioner available.

Medical team

Our medical team includes a Medical Director who is also the attending physician and a Nurse Practitioner. Our Medical Director rounds once a week and our Nurse Practitioner is full-time. Nurse Practitioners are authorized to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe all medications and other treatments.

Clinical specialist consultations are available including a psychogeriatric team who help meet the care requirements of residents with complex physical, cognitive and mental health needs.

We also have onsite telemedicine equipment for virtual consultations with specialists. This includes Respirology, Cardiology and Dermatology.

Residents may retain their own physician if the physician is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Physiotherapy

We provide physiotherapy services in-house to promote mobility for our residents.

Fairmount Home has an Occupational Therapist (OT). The OT helps our residents to develop, recover, improve and maintain the skills they need for activities of daily living.

The OT assesses our residents’ everyday tasks like eating, grooming, dressing, bathing and toileting. The OT then makes recommendations like positioning, set-up by staff, adaptive equipment and cueing. The OT’s goal is to help residents to function as fully as possible and increase their independence and self-esteem.

Residents may be eligible for funding to help with the costs of new mobility aides. The OT can help in filling out applications for funding.

A part-time chaplain coordinates our spiritual and religious care.

Services are in the Kingston Frontenac Rotary Auditorium every Sunday at 2 p.m. The services are led by a multi-faith chaplain or a faith group in the area. Roman Catholic Mass is held on the second Friday of each month. Residents, family and friends are welcome to attend the services.

The chaplain visits all residents regularly, especially residents who are not able to attend services or are in hospital.

Prayer and music bring comfort to our residents. The residents’ faith groups are welcome for friendly visiting.

Dietary

Fairmount Home offers healthy meals and snacks three times per day. Breakfast has a starch and protein option. We offer two meal options at lunch and supper including dessert.

Our dietician may recommend a special diet and supplements to ensure that a resident’s nutritional requirements are met. The dietitian monitors each resident’s progress every quarter and weights are monitored monthly.

Our nursing and housekeeping staff provide assistance with serving and feeding residents.

Meal times

  • Breakfast 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.
  • Lunch 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Supper 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Our Gentlecare® program enables residents, who wish to remain in bed later, with a light breakfast after 8:45 a.m. Coffee and tea is available for residents during the day in the dining room.

Visitors may buy a meal ticket to enjoy a meal with their loved one. We also have a café in the main lobby, which offers a light lunch until 2 p.m.

We have a policy on food brought in for residents.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping staff are on duty seven days a week. They are responsible for keeping our home clean.

Laundry

Clothing is sent to the laundry department to be labelled with the resident’s name. All linen and personal clothing can be laundered at our home, or family members can choose to launder their loved one’s clothing. We encourage the use of wash and wear, easy to put on, clothing. Wool or cotton clothing is discouraged, as it will shrink in the industrial washing machine.

Maintenace

Maintenance staff are on duty seven days a week to ensure all systems function as intended.

All long-term care homes in Ontario, including Fairmount Home, are regulated under the provisions of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act.
