Our History

On May 8, 1968 the first resident was welcomed to Fairmount Home, and the Official Opening of the Home was held on July 27, 1968. The new home was named “Fairmount” after the late Col. A. H. Fair who spent many thousands of dollars on the property and hoped it would be used for ‘institutional purposes’ in some form or another. It was purchased by Frontenac County Council in 1965 for $78,000 along with 19.03 acres of surrounding land.

An additional $1,200,000 was also approved by Council to build accommodation for 100 residents.

Once open, Fairmount Home was operated and maintained by the County of Frontenac in co-operation with the Province of Ontario, Department of Social and Family Services. Three types of care were offered – Bed Care (but not hospital care), Special Care (Senile) and Normal Care (Ambulatory).

By 1998 Fairmount Home was operated and maintained by the County of Frontenac in co-operation with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and no longer met the design standards set by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Fairmount Home was classified by the Ministry as a “D” level home, for redevelopment.

At this time the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced that additional long-term care beds would be allocated to communities in 2001. The County of Frontenac decided to apply to the Ministry for 32 beds as an add-on to the existing 96 beds in order to ensure the long-term financial viability of redeveloping Fairmount Home. An application was submitted to construct a 2-storey, 128-bed residential building that would exceed the Ministry Design Guidelines in several areas (larger rooms, eight-foot corridors, etc) and that would benefit the residents in their everyday living and enjoyment of their Home Area.

This application was successful and in early 2002 construction began on the new Fairmount Home, which opened to residents late in 2004.
