Family Council

Family Council is an organized, self-led, self-determining, democratic group composed of family and friends of the residents of Long-Term Care Homes.

The Council serves as a support group to work with residents, their family members and management staff.

In 2004, the Ontario Health Minister said "Family councils, bottom line, raise the quality of care for residents in long-term care facilities . . . including those that don't have families of their own to take care of them. The councils allow family members and residents to look out for their loved ones who live in nursing homes and bring any care concerns to the attention of staff."

Advantages of a Family Council

  • Assist in communication between residents, family members and management staff.
  • Provide education and information related to the long term care system.
  • Support residents where family and friends are not available.
  • Help family members get to know the services and operations of the many departments within Fairmount Home.

At this point in time Fairmount does not have a Family Council however we continue to encourage family members who may be interested in organizing a Family Council to let us know.

As we do not have a Family Council we hold two Family Information Sessions each year - one in the spring/early summer and another in the fall/early winter. For more information on Family Information Sessions, please contact Lisa Hirvi, Administrator at 613-546-4264, ext. 500.
