Howe Island Ferry Update May 24 2017

Posted on Wednesday May 24, 2017

May 24, 2017 - We would like to provide an update on the Howe Island County Ferry, especially in light of recent work being done to mitigate the high water levels and ensure continuing operation of the ferry.

In MTO and our efforts to keep the ferry operational we have been placing sand bags to stabilize the shoreline on the mainland around our ferry building. We have also been placing sandbags around the electrical control panel, and have removed the sea container that normally stores oil for the ferry. We have also raised the ramp hooks to better engage the vessel to the docks. These are all preventative measures to prepare us in the event water levels rise further.

Yesterday we had regular maintenance completed on the ferry in a shortened shutdown and today, starting at 10 a.m., MTO will shorten the cables on the ramp towers to allow the ramp to go higher.

MTO and the County are doing our best to keep these interruptions as short as possible to avoid prolonged shutdowns.
