Funds will be used to purchase new wheelchair ramp weigh scale

Glenburnie, ON – Fairmount Home will be purchasing a wheelchair ramp weigh scale thanks to a generous donation of $3,687 by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 560 in Kingston.

The new weigh scale is portable and can be used with wheelchairs, straight-legged chairs or as a stand-on scale, which is important for residents who may require mobility aids to be correctly weighed.

Merrill Gooderham, Poppy Chairman and Veteran Services Officer of the branch presented the cheque at Fairmount Home on Wednesday. Several of Fairmount Home’s nine resident veterans attended the event.

“After we received this request, we explained to our general membership what we were doing and they were fully behind this donation as was Ontario command,” said Gooderham. “Bottom line is that we are glad that the poppy campaign funds go to serve the community and the veterans,” Gooderham added.

Fairmount Home Administrator Lisa Hirvi was on hand to accept the cheque. She was joined by Frontenac County Warden Ron Vandewal, Deputy Warden Ron Higgins, Councillor John Inglis as well as several Legion members.

“We are very thankful for this generous donation from the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund,” said Fairmount Home Administrator Lisa Hirvi. “Weigh scales are important in long term care homes to ensure residents maintain an ideal body weight,” Hirvi said, adding that timely and accurate recording of residents’ weights ensures that the Registered Dietician and medical team are aware of significant weight gain or loss.

Fairmount Home is a not-for-profit long term care home, managed through the Gentlecaretm philosophy by the County of Frontenac and is accredited with Exemplary Standing, Accreditation Canada's highest designation. Fairmount Home was established in 1968 and is home to 128 residents.
